“I’m from Brooklyn, a place where stars are born/Streets are shot up, apartment buildings are torn” (GZA)

When the Black Star album came out people went crazy. Mos Def and Talib Kweli were newcomers with a massive flavour that in no time was on everybody’s mouth. Their voices were good, the tone exchange with their bars on the beats was something easy to recognize and even easier to fall in love with. I guess that we can say that these two are talented mcs with no doubt like we were Gwen Stefani. Beside the music gift, these Brooklyn natives are also provided with much style in the gear field. This duo combine fresh taste with afrocentric details, true to their revolutionary and individual credo. If you consider this, the designer named Dustin Canalin had no easy task to design for the Mos Def x Undrcrwn line this track field jacket, but he succeeded. I don’t know if I’m the best person to say this: I don’t own any item of this kind in my personal wardrobe but the impact it had to my eye when I peeped it at Vibrarecords/Move is equivalent to a Mohammed Ali punch. Brooknam? Of course. Call it Bucktown, Medina or Crooklyn, this is no more no less droppin respect to the area known to the wider audience as Brooklyn. If this item has got to represent for Mos Def, there is no choice: it’s gotta be clean, innovative but at the same time it has to be classic, a lot of care into any detail and crafted as a masterpiece. The classic part is the letter stitching and the font used for the word on your chest. The innovative part is that our friend Dustin came out with a pattern in green and red where all the little squares are nothing but the letters that form the name Mos Def. It got me wondering how he didn’t receive a Nobel price for this. My dear friend Luca I, once was at Supreme LA and there he found the likes of Giovanni Reda, the Italian reference in skateboard world and Mos Def shopping at the same time. After I saw this jacket, I think I may be tempted to spy on Mos Def moves, if I ever have a close encounter and bite his style. No, what am I sayin’?! I think I would give him The Maxiemillion sticker to thank him for being a positive influence for so many years…
